Start the dress search early.
You will want to have the bridesmaid dresses ordered at least 6 months before the wedding so that there is enough time for fittings and alterations after they come in. The sooner you find a gown that everyone likes, the easier it will be to move on to other wedding-related tasks.
Use your wedding dress as inspiration for the style of the bridesmaid dresses. Enjoy flipping through bridal magazines together and sharing wedding fashions that you find online. Hopefully a dress style will emerge from everyone's favorite picks.
Keep an open mind.
Trust that the women you have chosen to be your bridesmaids have your best interests at heart. They are not purposefully going to pick out something hideous and ruin your wedding. They are the ones that have to wear the dress all day long for numerous photos, so take their opinions into consideration and really listen to what they do and do not like.
Narrow down the choices for them.
That being said, this is your special day, so you do get to have your own opinion about what the bridesmaids will wear. Instead of asking them to choose from every dress available in our South Florida Bridal Salon, narrow down the options to a few of your favorites. Take your maid of honor along for input, and once you have found a few different ones that you both like, bring in the rest of the group for the final decision.
Take the season & time of day into consideration.
The expected temperature on the day of the wedding will play a large part in your fashion choices, as will the time of day of the ceremony and reception. Afternoon weddings are usually more casual, while evening celebrations tend to lean toward a more formal feel.
To match or not to match...
Do you want all of your bridesmaids to wear the exact same thing, or will you let them vary the styles? Both choices are perfectly acceptable. If you do have them wear different dresses, make sure that each gown has some type of unifying element to pull them together, like different shades of the same color or having all gowns with a similar element such as the same length or neckline.
Pay attention to pricing.
The sky may be the limit for you with your own wedding, but that may not be the case for your friends. You would hate for someone to have to turn down being one of your bridesmaids because it was too expensive. Be aware of what everyone can afford and do your best to stay within an appropriate price range for them.
Move around in that gown.
Bridesmaids will be doing a lot of walking, bending, reaching, and more while they assist the bride before the wedding, and once the reception dancing starts, they should be out on the dance floor jumping, twisting, and having the time of their lives. When you all find a bridesmaid gown you love, move around in it to make sure it will be comfortable and stay in place during all of the wedding day activities.
